San Carlos is a medium sized community found in the central western portion of the state of California. San Carlos covers a total area of slightly less than six square miles, including a little less than a hundredth of a square mile of standing surface water. San Carlos is physically situated between San Jose and San Francisco, in one of the most well-off regions of the Bay Area.
San Carlos is known as "The City of Good Living", a tribute to the outstanding standard of living that permeates the entirety of San Mateo County. San Carlos has its own airport, the San Carlos Airport, and is also a beneficiary of San Mateo County Transit and CalTrain. San Carlos is a moderately dense community, with about four thousand and seven hundred people per square mile. San Carlos was originally inhabited by the Lamchin Native Americans, who dominated the region until the second half of the eighteenth century. The first non-Native American to arrive in the area was Gaspar de Portola, a Spaniard who precipitated the arrival of missionaries and military personnel for the next several decades.
